Some Event Reviews
Annual UKC Lakeside Moonlit Garden Party, 2007

Snug Harbour Nov 16
"It was a chilly night but we soon found ourselves warmed by the ambience of 17 UK members who turned up at Snug Harbour. This night the venue was not crowded, the live jazz band was playing and although we could have danced, we enjoyed ourselves by chatting and enjoying selections from the menu. I might add that they serve very ample portions here, so those with hearty appetites were not disappointed!"
Best Wishes for the Season!

The single professional dance
I've attended several of these dances and find the company of UK Connexion friends help to make them less of a "meat market" scene. Thanks to the hosts- John Purtill, Ron and Jan! The Christmas event at the gorgeous Palais Royale was a little disappointing, with many women there and only one man, in spite of several having registered (thanks Maurice).
Last week's event in Don Mills saw couples joining our table with some remaining exclusive. That's definitely contrary to past events when all the gentlemen in the UKC group invite all the single women to dance at least once, and the table chatter can fill in idle time. The DJ is superb, offering a wide range of old and new favourites, and willing to take requests. There are a couple of "Ladies Choice" dances announced as well as "Gentlemen's Choice" (which is the assumed but not often announced condition). I hope this will entice more of you Torontonians to join the dance scene - and come early when the dance floor is less crowded.

New Year’s Eve at John's
As the evening wore on, one of the receptionists (Candy, Shona and Gail) greeted the guests, and we immediately headed for the bar. Josephine who was bartending at the time (to be followed by Wendy and Cliff) helped us find our beverage and we dived into the crowd. There were 59 people there (25 males and 34 females), and when we mixed the drinks with the hors d’oeuvres, we weren't feeling pain. D.J. Gary provided music and we danced, got hot and opened windows. At around 10 p.m. there was a buffet of salads, chicken, lasagna, steamed salmon, meats and goodies. Meanwhile, midnight crept up and to the usual chorus of Auld Lang Syne, there were kisses, hugs and greetings for the New Year.
Thank you John!
Arnold.

Sat. Jan 12 at the Swiss Pick:
Thanks to Ed for hosting this lovely evening at the Swiss Pick Restaurant. We had a good dinner and live music in a warm and friendly atmosphere. Many of the staff sang with the band including a waitress and the chef. A couple of guests were passed the microphone - luckily not me. None of our members attempted the tango or the cha cha cha but we did end up in a conga line led by Barbara. Overall, it was a good night. Check it out next time as we are booked to go back for Valentines on Feb. 16 and the same band say they will be there.

Wine-Making, December to January 2008
A group of seven eager participants spent an absolutely delightful three sessions with our charming host
John Sambrook. We started off by meeting Esther and Luca at Wine Kitz who guided us through the wine making process. We honed our skills and filtered the wine. On our last session we saw our finished product with the final added touch of attaching bottle labels that Irene had designed. After sampling our wine we went to a nearby restaurant and enjoyed a great meal with wine generously supplied by our host from the Black Prince Winery. Thank you John for organizing this educational and fun event.

THE MUSICAL “OLIVER”

On February 2, eleven UKC members were treated to an afternoon of superb entertainment during this sold out performance. From the very first song, “Food Glorious Food,” right through to the finale, “I'd Do Anything,” the audience was entranced. As the story unfolded, the magnificent cast were put through their paces, as they poured out one beautiful song after another.
Following the theatre, we decided to have some “Food Glorious Food” and enjoyed a delicious dinner at the nearby Swiss Chalet. Here, we toasted Jack Travis, our UKC newsletter editor, for his very talented performance in the musical.  Thank you Elizabeth for organizing this wonderful day. Perhaps there will be an encore?
